Frequently asked questions
What is URL encoding (percent-encoding)?
URL encoding replaces unsafe or reserved characters with a % followed by two hexadecimal digits, so the string can be safely used inside a URL or query string.
What is the difference between encodeURIComponent and encodeURI?
encodeURIComponent escapes everything except unreserved marks, making it safe for query parameter values. This tool uses the strict component encoding, which is what you need in most cases.
Why do spaces become %20?
Spaces are not allowed in URLs, so they are percent-encoded as %20. In query strings you may also see them written as a plus sign (+).
